The Institute of Environmental and Landscape Management of the Szent István University in Gödöllö is committed to undertake interdisciplinary research relating to agriculture and the environment considering rural resource management, rural development and land use with the purpose of informing policy makers and the academic community about the scale, causes and consequences of problems facing rural areas, as well as about policy options. The Institute specialises in the research and development of systematic understanding of land use and rural systems. Major projects have included the development of a land use zone system at a national scale and the development of more detailed local models of agricultural and rural land use.

The Department of Environmental Economics at IELM is dealing with energy and environmental economics issues with a stress on social aspects. Its methods are rather qualitative ones stemming from post normal science and ecological economics. IELM-SIU is responsible for Work Package 6 of the Coach BioEnergy project, the task of which is to embark on launching the consultancy service. This needs well prepared strategies, policies and professional content which are delivered by the preceding Work Packages. Additionally IELM-SIU is responsible for assessing selected technology chains regarding their environmental soundness, social acceptance and economic viability within Work Package 4. In the Coach BioEnergy project IELM-SIU participates as a Competence Access Centre (CAC).
